Read: Galatians 5:13, 22-23
"You were called to freedom... only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." — Galatians 5:13
American culture celebrates the self-made individual who needs no one — and there's courage in that. But left unchecked, that instinct curdles into isolation, and isolation is not the same thing as freedom.
The proof of real spiritual liberty isn't independence from people — it's love that flows freely, without resentment or obligation. And Paul says this kind of love isn't produced by gritted teeth; it's fruit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) — that grows naturally when the Spirit is truly in charge.
A tree with deep roots looks independent, standing unmoved by wind that flattens shallower plants. But it isn't independent of the soil; its strength comes from what it's rooted in.
Reflect: Where has your independence quietly turned into isolation — a relationship you've withdrawn from, a community you've pulled away from? What's one small step back toward connection this week?
Prayer: Lord, don't let my freedom make me distant. Let it make me generous. Grow Your fruit in me so love comes naturally, not by force. Amen.
