Day 1: What Independence Really Costs

Read: Galatians 5:1 · John 8:34 · Romans 6:18 · Romans 8:2

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1

Independence was never free — not for a nation, and not for your soul. The founders pledged their lives, fortunes, and honor for a political liberty. Christ paid infinitely more for yours.

Here's the uncomfortable truth Jesus names in John 8:34: "Everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin." The most independent-looking person — answering to no one, doing whatever they please — can be the most enslaved person in the room. Real independence was never about having no master. It's about having the right one.

Paul says it plainly: you've been set free from sin to become a slave of righteousness (Romans 6:18), and "the law of the Spirit of life has set you free... from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:2). Not willpower. Not a resolution. The Spirit of life Himself.

Reflect: What is one area of your life where you look free on the outside but feel enslaved on the inside — to a habit, a fear, an opinion, a grudge? Name it honestly before God today.

Prayer: Lord, thank You that my freedom was purchased, not earned. Show me where I'm still wearing a chain I don't have to wear. Set me free — truly free. Amen.
